They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
"We will remember them"

'Lest-we-forget'

History of the Parramatta RSL Golf Club

I feel priviledged and honoured to compile this sequence that traces the history of the Parramatta RSL Social Golf Club.

Late Cec Weekes (Life Member of Parramatta RSL and Golf Club) was one of the longest serving members of the Golf Club has generously donated his time and thoughts on the origin of the Parramatta Social Golf Club.

Cec recollects ….."At the conclusion of the 2nd World War, all returned Ex-serviceman were keen to get back into civil life and press on with establishing their post war lives and their futures". Apart from establishing their family life, sport also became a crucial part of their future.

Golf, one of the oldest game started in Parramatta RSL in 1952. One of the oldest players still alive, Ernie Rust played in that first game. The foundation committee was formed by stalwarts like Bob Hanna, Ted and Nev Blundell, Bob Muldoon, Tom Laney and Les Molloy. During that time the average age of the golfers would have been in the 40’s and 50’s. Most of the players if not all were keen to showcase their golfing and sporting skills. All players at that time had unique nicknames – some that cannot be mentioned due to obvious reasons!!

-- One digger hit on the head, with a ball of course, returned for the next game suitably sporting a ‘tin hat’ – hence his nickname!

As the Club progressed, the Social Golf Club Committees became more established and golfers formed strong friendships, players wives attended Golf Club functions and children attended Christmas Tree functions organized by the Golf Club. Even till today, family values are still remain the predominant attraction to the game.

Cec Weekes recollects, after a period of 10 years under the presidency of Les Molloy, I then assumed the role of President of the Golf Club and continued in that postion for the next 25 years.

As the Golf Club entered the 70’s and 80’s, the Golf Club was invited to play their social games at Oatlands Golf Club, Castle Hill Golf Club and Muirfield Golf Club. Currently the Golf Club play on some of the best courses in the district and continues to attract single handicap players.

Cec states "I bet Les Molloy and Sandie Ritchie still continue to play this wonderful game – in heaven!!"

As we embrace the next millenium, the Parramatta RSL Golf Club still operates with the same original values and traditions but require the injection of a new breed of golfers that will carry on the traditions and values as set by of the old stalwarts with the likes of Blundell’s and Molloy’s.

With our 75th Anniversary on the horizon, we are looking to invite any new golfers to join this prestigious Club and carry on the traditions of our past golfers. In return we promise to reward you with mateship and moreover a good day out.

Our goal is to ‘keep this family club progressing into the next century’ and with your participation and help the Golf Club will continue to surpass the next 70 years".
